Venice, Murano, and Burano are three charming and picturesque islands located in the Venetian lagoon in Italy. Table of Contents

Burano Island

Burano Island is known for its brightly colored houses and intricate lace making. The island is a small fishing village with picturesque canals and small bridges, and it’s a perfect place to take a leisurely stroll and admire the vibrant surroundings.

When in Burano, you can also visit the Church of San Martino, a beautiful church located in the center of the island that has a unique bell tower, which gives the church its distinctive appearance.

The island is small and easy to explore on foot, and it’s possible to walk around and explore all of the island’s main attractions in just a few hours. It’s a perfect place to relax, take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the peacefulness of the lagoon.

If you are interested, you can also visit the Lace Museum on the island to learn about the history of lace-making and even see artisans at work creating delicate lace.

Murano Island

We then took a ferry to the island of Murano, which is known for its glassblowing. There you can take a guided tour to one of the traditional glass factories and see a demonstration of the glassblowing process in action and even buy some of the beautiful hand-crafted glassware. From vases to chandeliers, jewelry, and sculptures, you can find a wide range of glass creations on the island.

Murano also boasts some beautiful churches, such as the Church of Santa Maria e Donato, which has beautiful Byzantine mosaics on the floor. Another one is the Church of San Pietro Martire, which is known for its magnificent altarpiece.

Useful tips for visiting Burano and Murano

Is one day enough for visiting both islands?

It’s possible to visit both islands in one day, but it might be better to divide it into two, so you can take your time and enjoy the sights without rushing.

How to reach the islands?

To get to Murano, take a waterbus (vaporetto) from Venice’s main island to the Fondamenta Nove. To get to Burano, take a waterbus from Fondamenta Nove to Burano.

Which waterbus ticket to purchase?

For transportation to Murano and Burano, you can purchase a single ticket for the ACTV waterbus (vaporetto) at a ticket booth or vending machine located at the waterbus stop. An alternative option is the Venice City Pass, which includes unlimited use of ACTV waterbuses for a certain number of days. You can purchase a pass for 24, 36, or 48 hours, depending on how long you plan to stay on the islands. We recommend buying the Venice City Pass since it is much cheaper than buying single tickets.

Overall, Burano and Murano is a perfect way to add a unique touch to your Venetian itinerary. It’s a great place to escape the crowds and see another side of the Veneto region.
