Why visit Dieppe?
If you are a sea lover, then this destination is for YOU! Dieppe is a French commune located in the Seine-Maritime department of the Normandy region in the North West of France. Dieppe is the closest seaside to Paris and is located on the Alabaster Coast. This hidden gem of Northern France has absolutely an amazing coast on the English Channel (La Manche).
When to visit and for how many days?
If you want to have a chill weekend by the sea away from the city, then Dieppe is a superb idea during all seasons! But of course each season has its own mood. Importantly ,during summer, many people visit it from all over France to have a swim and sunbathe .As a result,it becomes more crowded. However, during other seasons, it is more chill and calm. We visited Dieppe during a weekend in the end of February and luckily the sun was shining!
With who to visit Dieppe?
Dieppe can accommodate all of your vacation needs, whether for a full family holiday, a visit with friends or even a couple’s retreat for a chill romantic getaway.
How to get to there?
1. By train from Rouen: it is a direct train that takes 45 mins
2. By train from Paris with a connection in Rouen (around 10 mins). Overall, the whole trip takes around 2h20mins
3. By bus from Paris: We took a direct bus (Flixbus) from Paris Défense to Dieppe since it is almost the same duration (2h40mins) and with a much lower price! The Flixbus stop in Dieppe is located next to the SNCF train station and is very close to the city center.
4. By car from Paris (2h40mins)
Where to stay in Dieppe?
Dieppe is a small town and most of the hotels and Airbnb apartments are located in the city center. So after hours of research, we then chose to stay in an Airbnb apartment and here is why. There aren’t many hotels in Dieppe so the choice is limited. The average price for a hotel double room was around 50 euros per night compared with that of Airbnb which ranges from 20 to 40 euros. Moreover, for the price of 50 euros, there are plenty of good, spacious and clean apartments in contrast to the hotels’ tiny 9 squared meter room.
And for the overly adventurous among you:
If you want to have a unique experience, you can also stay in a boat in the port! Many boat owners propose their boats as an accommodation. However, bathrooms will be located outside the boat to keep the port’s water clean!
Things to do in Dieppe
What we loved about Dieppe is that you can visit everything on foot!
Château-musée
You can arrive at the castle (Château-musée) by walking around 10 mins from the city center. And the view from up there is amazing! So you will enjoy a panoramic view of Dieppe and the English Channel!
La Manche
Have a walk by the beach or ride a bike along the 1.5 Km coast and try not to miss a stunning sunset!
The city with four ports
Since dieppe is known as the city with four ports, you’d be missing a big part of the city itself if you dont’ take a walk by them.
The lighthouse
Depending on the wave height, you can walk to the lighthouse. During our stay, we had the chance to have this little but wonderful walk and enjoyed a panoramic view on the English Channel.
Historic churches
Visit the main historic churches of Dieppe which are mainly Chapelle Notre Dame de Bonsecours, Saint Jacques Church and Saint Remy Church.
City center
Have a walk in the city center, because the streets are lively during the weekend and don’t forget to pass by the famous Café des Tribinaux in the “Place du Puit Salé”.
Where to eat in Dieppe?
our last tip in this guide to visit dieppe
If you are visiting Dieppe during a weekend, then the Saturday local market is a must! Since it was voted the second best market in all of France! You can find fresh local fruits and vegetables, homemade products, roasted chicken, sausages, but also some clothes.
Breakfast on the beach anyone?
Then we highly recommend “Les Pépites De Pain”! This take-away only bakery is quite well known throughout Dieppe since it really offers delicious bread, sandwhiches, croissants, cakes, pastry and much more. After grabbing your food, head on down to have a breakfast with an amazing view on the beach.
For lunch and dinner, Dieppe has a lot of restaurants especially next to the port. It is known for its delicious sea food but also there are many other options: French, Italian, American restaurants etc. Most of the restaurants offer a two or three courses menu for an average price between 20 and 25 euros.
